Step 4. Be conscious

Everyday racism is not all white sheets and burning crosses, mostly it a lot of unconscious everyday microaggressions. We carry them like sharp needles in our unconscious behaviour because we have been taught that we have the right to say and do anything we believe we have the right to. So we say and do hurtful shit all the time and we are surprised when such unthoughtfulness is return with anger. 

Exercise: Don’t be rude.

Do not ask loaded questions about other people’s identities, consider other people’s feelings and do not blame people for responding emotionally when you have triggered them.
